Frequently Asked Questions
What you see happening with your curls is important, but it may not reveal everything influencing them. Over approximately the past 20 years, published research has expanded what we know about hair structure, lipids, chemical damage, water, product interactions and the behavior of naturally curly hair. Much of this knowledge has not yet reached mainstream salon education, where simplified (and sometimes scientifically disproven) ideas are still commonly taught.
CURLtelligence™ helps bridge that gap.
Getting Started
-
Begin by completing our New Client Form. It gives us important information about your hair, previous services, current routine, recurring concerns and goals. Once your form is complete, your next step is the Complimentary New Client Consultation.
-
Yes. All new curl clients attend a consultation. We explore your hair’s history and behavior, discuss what you have experienced and clarify your goals. We also microscopically analyze your scalp and hair and explain our recommendations, your starting options and why the order of your services matters.
-
After your consultation, we will recommend the starting option best suited to your hair, goals and desired level of support. This may be the CURLtelligence™ First Visit Experience or a more comprehensive Premium CURLtelligence™ Journey. We will explain what each appropriate option includes and any applicable pricing before you decide how to proceed.
Understanding Your Approach
-
CURLtelligence™ is a research-informed approach built on published discoveries from hair science and related hard sciences. Instead of relying primarily on curl typing, appearance or generalized routines, we consider your hair’s history, structure, condition, variability and behavior. This allows us to apply current scientific understanding to your individual hair.
-
Research supports understanding curls as variations along a spectrum not as completely separate categories. We work with hair across the entire curl spectrum. If your hair bends, curves, coils or changes its behavior depending on its condition and environment, it may benefit from a curl-informed approach.
-
No. Curl-type labels describe how hair appears, but they do not explain why it behaves as it does or what it needs. We consider more useful factors, including strand size, density, curl memory, variability, history and structural condition. You do not need to fit your hair into a category before we can begin understanding it.
-
The problem may not be that you have not found the right product yet. Much of the curl advice given to clients and professionals is based on simplified or outdated ideas that do not account for what research now tells us about hair structure, lipids, buildup, damage, water and environmental conditions. We look beneath the visible symptom, so your next step is guided by evidence instead of another round of trial and error.
Restoration and Results
-
Curl restoration is a structured, research-informed process that addresses barriers affecting how your hair looks, feels and responds. You will benefit if you experience any or all of the following: persistent dryness, buildup, dullness, breakage, inconsistent definition, poor longevity or curls that no longer behave as expected. Your New Client Form and consultation help us determine the most appropriate starting option.
-
Hair affected by buildup or lipid depletion will improve significantly (except for in rare situations) with appropriate care. Structurally compromised hair may have permanent limitations, so not every form of damage can be reversed. You may notice changes after one appointment, but meaningful restoration may require continued care and an honest understanding of what your hair can support.
-
Buildup, depletion and structural changes can alter how curls appear and respond, making it difficult to see their more accurate behavior. The First Visit Experience allows us to remove barriers, establish a better foundation and observe how your hair responds, as well as identify current issues, before making permanent cutting or chemical decisions. We explain the scientific and practical reasons for this sequence during your consultation.
Haircuts, Color and Versatility
-
Your First Visit Experience cannot be combined with a haircut or color service. Those services are scheduled separately so we can first observe how your hair responds to the restoration process. The order and timing of your appointments will be explained during your consultation, so you understand not only what we recommend, but why.
-
You do not have to wear your hair curly all the time. Our goal is to help you have healthy, versatile hair that supports the ways you enjoy wearing it. We consider whether you wear your hair curly, stretched or straight when planning your haircut and ongoing care.
-
Any chemical lightening can alter the hair’s structure and affect curl behavior. Research-informed preparation, product selection and technique can reduce unnecessary risk, but no responsible professional can promise that lightening carries no risk. We will evaluate what your hair can reasonably support before developing your color plan.
Home Care and Ongoing Support
-
Not necessarily. Products are tools, and more products do not automatically produce better results. We help you understand what may support your hair, what may be interfering with it and how product choices interact with your hair, water, environment and routine. Your home care should be both purposeful and practical enough to maintain.
-
Your timeline depends on your hair’s starting condition, history, goals and consistency between appointments. Some changes will be noticeable after your First Visit Experience, while continued improvement, length retention or major color goals may require several stages. Your plan and maintenance schedule will be based on how your hair responds rather than a one-size-fits-all timeline.
Ready to Begin?
You are not expected to identify which service will resolve what you are experiencing. Start by telling us what you have noticed, what you have tried and what you hope to achieve. We will use that information during your Complimentary New Client Consultation to recommend the most appropriate way to begin.
